Creating Urban Gardens

Urbanization, for all its pluses, has also led to the increase in pollution, garbage and health problems. The rapid increase in population and scarcity of land in urban areas has also contributed to these problems. Crime is higher in urban areas, compared to suburbs. Concern about these problems have led a growing number of cities to initiate urban gardening projects. All over the country, communities have transformed vacant lots into beautiful gardens. Vegetable gardens now allow city folks to enjoy fresh, organic vegetables. And flower gardens have replaced what were previously eye sores in the metro. Perhaps most importantly, urban gardens have fostered a sense of unity in the community, as well as provided a venue where young and old alike can have a productive social interaction. Community gardens also help to foster a sense of identity and camaraderie for the people who create them.
